Safeguarding Children and Adults for Dental Practices

This course gives each member of the dental practice attending the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to be able to respond effectively to issues of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults.

The course includes and following content:

An Introduction to Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults

  • Safeguarding children and vulnerable adults terms and concepts
  • An overview of relevant legislation, policy and local structures/procedures
  • An overview of the Mental Capacity Act and issues of consent

First Steps in Safeguarding

  • Indicators of abuse – how to recognise that a child or vulnerable adult may be at risk
  • Similarities and differences between safeguarding children and vulnerable adults

Roles and responsibilities

  • What policies and procedures should the practice have in place?
  • What are the legal requirements on dental practices?
  • What action should individuals (and the practice) should take when they have a concern; and what responses should be received from other professionals such as the police and social care?
